About The Event

Upahaar School of Dance invites you to the Bharatanatyam Arangetram of Sanya Narayanan.

Upahaar School of Dance is a leading instituition that specialises in the Indian classical performing arts, with it's primary focus on Natya or Dance. We offer training in Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Mohinattam, as well as Carnatic Vocal and Mridangam, to students of all ages.

In 2011, Sanya Narayanan started training in Bharatanatyam under the tutelage of Smt. Shalini Shivashankar at Upahaar School of Dance from the age of six. Sanya began to learn Carnatic Vocal at the age of 5 with Sri Sampath Kumaracharya Daruri from 2010-2012, then later with Rukshayna Ravindran in 2020, with the intent to further explore her interests in more traditional styles, broadening her knowledge of both art forms, which has ultimately strengthened her passion for the arts.

In London, Sanya has performed with the Upahaar ensemble as well as solo performances, notably in the Houses of Parliament and the South African Embassy. Eager to gain as much stage experience as she can, Sanya has also performed for numerous organisations, such as the London Hindu Aikyavedi, the Malayalee Women's Day Association, and landmark performing arts venues Churchill Theatre and at the Sri Mahalakshmi Temple. Moreover, Sanya achieved the first prize award at the Croydon Performing Arts Festival twice (2016, 2018) under the ‘South Asian Dance’ category. Sanya has also performed with her mother Shoba and her sister Sanjana at many cultural programmes, showcasing semi-classical and contemporary pieces over the last decade, in and around London. She has also been training for her ISTD examinations and is the first student at Upahaar to have earned a distinction in the vocational level Intermediate Foundation exam. Sanya also recently had the opportunity to apply for the BBC Young Dancer 2022 competition, which was an eye-opening experience for her as she gained some insight into the professional dance world.

Along with her sister, Sanya had the absolute honour of receiving blessings from The Natyacharyas -The Dhananjayans in 2019. As for her Bharatanatyam training, Sanya has furthered her passion for dance by immersing herself in specialised workshops with world renowned Bharatanatyam artists such as Renjith and Vijna, Praveen Kumar and many more, which has allowed her to enhance her Nritta and Abhinaya skills. Furthermore, she is also part of the assistant teaching faculty at Upahaar School of Dance, in the Sutton and Croydon branches. The ability to teach other students has been extremely beneficial for Sanya, as it has allowed her to strengthen her leadership skills and continues to benefit her growth as a Bharatanatyam dancer
