About The Event

Join us to celebrate the Bharatanatyam Arangetram of one of Upahaar's senior students in the Sutton branch, and our newest junior teacher - Rithika Nair!

About Rithika Nair:

Rithika commenced Bharatanatyam classes at the age of 5, under the tutelage of Shalini Shivashankar, at Upahaar School of Dance’s Sutton branch, in 2012. Simultaneously, she began her training in Carnatic Music under the guidance of Swapna Srikanth. Whilst developing a sound understanding of nuances between rhythms and beats, she continues to improve her nritta and abhinaya skills. Besides Bharatanatyam and Carnatic vocal, in 2020, Rithika began her initial training in Mohiniattam with one of Upahaar’s Mohiniyattam teachers, Daniella Zak Varghese, and now continues with Shalini Shivashankar. Recently, she joined Upahaar’s Faculty Team as a Bharatanatyam (trainee) teacher at the Sutton Branch.

Rithika has performed across the UK at locations such as the Bharatiya Vidhya Bhavan, Fairfield Halls, Skanda Vale temple and Bescot Stadium, as part of Upahaar’s Ensemble group. Notable events she has performed at include ISKCON South London’s 30th Anniversary, the Croydon Mela and London Hindu Aikyavedi’s annual Navaratri programme. In 2023, Rithika was selected as the senior winner of ISTD’s Bursary Awards. For the last two years Rithika has been undergoing intensive training with Acharya Shalini Shivashankar to present her solo Bharatanatyam debut (Arangetram).

Currently, Rithika is in Year 12, studying Art, Physics and Chemistry for her A-Levels. She aspires to pursue a career in Architecture, whilst continuing to nurture her passion for Indian classical dance and music.
